Qihan lived at Wuqiu and entered the Flowing Water practice site for reciting the Buddha's name. In a single thought-moment, he saw the realm and characteristics of the Pure Land. Suddenly he chanted a song: / 'The flowing water stirs and ripples ripple; / The lotuses shine, accompanied by jeweled light. / Riding the light westward—who goes with me?' / Earlier, the master had been ill for ten years. A disciple asked, 'The Ācārya abandons life, so why cling to illness?' The master said, 'A body bound to perish cannot be avoided even by the holy.' He then turned to look at the holy image and passed away.
