At Dashan Monastery in Yue, there was an unordained attendant who always followed his teacher Shanhui in reciting the Buddha’s name and bowing. One night, he dreamed of a woman holding rosary beads for sale. The boy said, “I want a strand, but I regret having no money to buy it.” The woman said, “I will give them to you. You may open your mouth.” She then tossed the rosary beads into his mouth. The boy told his teacher about this, and Hui said, “This is Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva granting you the samādhi of mindfulness of the Buddha.” Several days later, the boy saw two Mahāsattvas holding a flower throne, giving it to him and saying, “In seven days, you shall ride this to be born in the Pure Land.” Whenever the boy met anyone, he said, “In seven days, I shall be reborn.” When the time came, he suddenly called out himself, “The bodhisattvas have come!” and passed away upon his seat.
