Hu Yin held the post of Vice Minister and Court Gentleman for Manifesting Righteousness; he was the son of Hu Ze. In his later years, he retired from office and enjoyed his leisure by the West Lake. He was on good terms with Vinaya Master Qingzhao. One day, being ill, he asked the Vinaya Master, “Why is it that a single recitation of the Buddha’s name can eradicate the heavy sins of birth and death of eighty billion kalpas?” The master said, “The Buddha’s great majesty and virtue are such that when sentient beings once recite his name, their sinful defilements naturally melt away, just as when the bright sun is at high noon, how could frost and dew remain?” Yin was greatly awakened and single-mindedly recited the Buddha’s name, inviting monks to assist him. One day, when the Vinaya Master arrived, Yin said, “I have been favored by the two Mahāsattvas descending and remaining here for a long time.” The master performed repentance and made vows on his behalf. Suddenly, Yin recited the Buddha’s name in a loud voice, sat peacefully, and passed away.
