Ge Fan was a native of Chengjiang. In his youth, he passed the civil service examinations, and his rank reached Grand Master for Closing Court. Whenever he was in his official residence or private home, he would always adorn a pure chamber and install an image of the Buddha. Every time he entered the chamber to bow and chant, relics would descend from the sky. He broadly encouraged both clergy and laity to cultivate Pure Land karma together, and all were transformed by his influence. A monk in samādhi traveled to the Pure Land and saw Fan and Vice Minister Wang Gu strolling together among the precious ponds and rows of trees. Soon after, it was heard that Fan had passed away without illness.
