Yu Shen was a native of Xinye. Eating vegetarian food and wearing coarse cloth, he did not pursue commercial wealth. In his youth he had been friendly with Emperor Wu of the Liang; when summoned by imperial edict to serve as Cavalier Regular Attendant (Huangmen Shilang), he did not accept. Inside his residence, he established a sanctuary where he performed repentance and recited the Lotus Sūtra throughout the six periods of the day. Suddenly, in the latter half of the night, he saw a man of the Dao calling himself Master Yuan (Vow), of exceedingly wondrous deportment. He addressed Yu Shen as 'Master Shangxing (Superior Practice)', bestowed incense on him, and departed. Later, while lying ill, Yu Shen woke with a start and said: 'Master Yuan has come again; I cannot stay long.' The entire household heard a voice from the sky calling: 'Master Shangxing has already been born in the Pure Land of Amitābha.' By imperial edict, he was posthumously conferred the title of Retired Scholar Zhenjie (Pure and Upright).
