Wang Rixiu was a native of Longshu. He became a Metropolitan Graduate of the National University and composed several hundred thousand words of commentary and instruction on the Six Classics. One day, he cast them aside, saying: 'These are all karmic habits, not the ultimate Dharma. I shall return to the Western Paradise.' Thereupon, wearing coarse hemp and eating vegetarian food, he recollected solely the Buddha. His daily task was a thousand prostrations, sleeping only at midnight. He once composed the Jingtu wen (Treatise on the Pure Land) in ten fascicles, which was simple and clear; none who read it failed to believe and submit. One evening, he recited the Buddha's name in a loud voice. After a long while, he suddenly said: 'The Buddha has come to receive me!' Standing firm and upright, he passed away. People of his district dreamt of two green-clad youths leading him away to the west.
