The Buddha addressed Kauṇḍinya: 'Where is Ānanda?' Kauṇḍinya replied: 'He is outside the Sāla forest, twelve yojanas from this great assembly, harassed by sixty-four thousand billion demons. These multitudes of demons have all transformed their bodies into the form of the Tathāgata, preaching all dharmas and displaying spiritual penetrations. Ānanda thought, "Could such spiritual transformations not have been done by the Buddha?" Because Ānanda has fallen into the snare of the demons, he is suffering extreme distress. For this reason he has not come here.' The Buddha said to Mañjuśrī: 'Ānanda is my younger brother. He has served me for more than twenty years, and fully receives and upholds whatever Dharma he hears, like pouring water from one vessel into another. For this reason I now inquired where he was, wishing to have him receive and uphold this Nirvāṇa Sūtra. Now he is being tormented by demons; you should take this great dhāraṇī and go rescue and protect him.' Having received it, Mañjuśrī went to Ānanda's place. When the demon king heard the dhāraṇī, he gave rise to the bodhimind, abandoned demonic deeds, and immediately released Ānanda to return to the Buddha's place (Nirvāṇa Sūtra).
