In the third year, an edict summoned Chan Master Yixing for an audience. The Emperor consulted him on the way to bring peace to the state and comfort to the people, as well as the essential dharmas of world-transcendence, addressing him as the Imperial Preceptor (the Teacher of the Son of Heaven). The Emperor asked, "How will the fortunes of the state fare?" He replied, "The imperial carriage will make a journey of ten thousand li; the altars of state will end in auspiciousness (ji)." He presented a golden box, saying, "Open and look at it only when you reach ten thousand li." Inside was merely a small amount of angelica (danggui, "ought to return"). During the rebellion of An Lushan, the Emperor traveled to Chengdu. Reaching the Ten-Thousand-Li Bridge, he realized the prophecy of danggui ("ought to return"), and, completely relieved, forgot his sorrows. As for "ending in auspiciousness" (zhongji), it ceased with Emperor Zhaozong, because he had once been enfeoffed as the Prince of Ji.
