In the fourth year, Tripiṭaka Master Śubhakarasiṃha arrived from Western India. Prior to this, Ruizong had heard of the master's fame and sent General Shi Xian beyond the Yumen Pass to welcome him. By this time, the Emperor had dreamed that an extraordinary monk came to call on him, and ordered his likeness to be painted on a wall; when the master entered for an audience, he did not differ from the portrait on the wall. The Emperor was delighted, decorated an inner practice-hall for him to dwell in, and revered him as the leader of the teachings. The master translated scriptures such as the Vairocana-sūtra, and from this the Esoteric school flourished. Japan sent the monk Genbō to China to seek the Dharma.
