Third year [1096 CE]. At Mount Yang in Yuanzhou, a stone relic stupa appeared spontaneously, twenty zhang in height. Huang Tingjian was exiled to Qiannan, where he abstained from alcohol and severed desires, reading the Tripiṭaka for three full years. He often said: "Gain and loss, defame and praise, eulogy and ridicule, sorrow and joy—these eight winds are never separated from the four postures. Even the primal sages and great wits of antiquity, did any stand outside these eight winds? Without studying the Way, one cannot know this." (The Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra says: "The bodhisattva's practice toward gain and loss, defame and praise, eulogy and ridicule, sorrow and joy, remains equal and unchanging.") Chan Master Fayun Xiu said to Luzhi: "You write alluring songs to agitate people's lustful minds and cause them to transgress propriety and violate prohibitions. Your guilt will not merely be falling into evil destinies." Luzhi never composed them again. Li Boshi was skilled at painting horses; the master admonished him, saying: "For a scholar-official to make a reputation by painting is already shameful, how much more so painting horses!" Boshi said: "Would that not cause me to fall into evil destinies?" The master said: "You contemplate their divine swiftness and keep it in mind without forgetting; in days to come you will certainly enter the belly of a horse." Boshi was shocked and terrified, and thereupon mostly painted Guanyin to wash away his fault.
