Fourth year [1097 CE]. Eighteen people, including Chan Master Faying of Mount Damei in Siming, submitted a formal petition to the prefecture stating: "The Hangzhou monk Yuanzhao arrived in the prefecture distributing a Pure Land collection, claiming it was composed by Tripiṭaka Master Cimin of the Tang. Although titled as an encouragement to cultivate pure karma, its real intention is to slander the Chan school, branding them as people with deviant views who cling to emptiness. We have now searched the Tripiṭaka, and this text does not exist. We therefore composed an 'Explanation Slander' to interrogate him, begging that Yuanzhao be summoned and questioned to thoroughly verify its authenticity." Zhao had no way to answer, and only claimed that there was a copy in an old canon. The prefectural authorities recognized that his reasoning was exhausted, yet respecting his observance of the Vinaya, merely ordered the original copy to be confiscated and destroyed to resolve the dispute. (The printing blocks of the Jiebang shu are kept at Mount Meishan; its presentation of principles and doctrinal reasoning is most elegant and upright).
