The Sixth Patriarch, the Venerable Micchaka, was a man of Central India and the leader of eight thousand ṛṣis. He was widely learned, deeply versed, and possessed great eloquence. He went to see Dhītika and said, 'In the past, I was born in the Brahmā heaven together with you, Master. I met Asita, who taught me the ṛṣi arts; you met a great spiritual friend and cultivated the Buddha-path. From then on our paths diverged, and six kalpas have already passed. That ṛṣi prophesied: "After six kalpas, you will meet your fellow student and attain the realization of the sage fruit." Is not our meeting today due to past conditions?' Dhītika then preached the Dharma for him, and he realized the taintless state. The assembly of ṛṣis did not believe it, so Dhītika manifested supernatural transformations for them; only then was the assembly convinced, and they all attained the fruit of the Way. When Dhītika was about to enter extinction, he entrusted the Dharma to him, saying, 'The Buddha entrusted the true Dharma to Mahākāśyapa; thus it was transmitted successively down to me. I now entrust it to you; you should disseminate it.' Micchaka accepted the instruction and propagated the true Dharma, opening the path of nirvāṇa to all sentient beings. When his karmic conditions for transforming beings were completed, he entered nirvāṇa. The assembly gathered his relics and erected a stupa to make offerings to them (from the *Fu fazang jing*).
