The Seventh Patriarch, the Venerable Buddhanandi, was a man of Northern India. His wisdom and understanding, as well as his skill in preaching, surpassed all in his day. When Micchaka first arrived in that country, he gazed at the golden auspicious clouds above the ramparts and sighed, 'Beneath this there must be a great being who can become the Dharma-heir.' He then went to search for him, and indeed found Buddhanandi in the marketplace. He said to him, 'My master Dhītika said that when the Bhagavat traveled in Northern India in the past, he said to Ānanda: "Three hundred years after my extinction, there will be a sage named Buddhanandi who will propagate the Dharma here."' Nandi replied, 'I recall that in a past kalpa I once offered a jeweled throne to the Tathāgata, and on that account he prophesied to me: "During the Bhadrakalpa, within the Dharma of Śākya, you should propagate the teaching." Now this matches your words, Master. I wish to seek ordination.' As soon as he heard the Dharma preached, he attained the four fruits. When Micchaka was about to enter extinction, he entrusted the true Dharma to him for dissemination. Later, when Nandi's karmic conditions for transforming beings were nearing their end, he entered nirvāṇa. The assembly gathered his relics and erected a stupa to make offerings to them (from the *Fu fazang jing*).
