The Seventh Patriarch, the Venerable Tiangong, Huiwei, had the family name Liu and was a native of Dongyang in Wuzhou. At the age of wearing his hair in tufts, he deeply abhorred this wearying life, and thereupon entered the empty gate, shaving his hair and receiving the full precepts. Hearing that Fahua was greatly propagating the Way of Tiantai, he went there to receive instruction, intently dedicating himself to the methods of meditation. Striving day and night solely in the Dharma gate of the threefold contemplation, he suddenly attained awakening. People of the time saw that he had deeply entered Master Wei's inner chamber, and thereupon called him 'Lesser Master Wei'. Later he returned to dwell in Dongyang, living deep in the valleys and rarely mingling in human affairs. After Fahua entered extinction, those who came to his gate to seek the Way were beyond count. The only one to whom he specifically transmitted the Dharma was Zuoxi. During the reign of Emperor Gaozong, the Master, together with Fahua, was enfeoffed as Grand Master of Closing Court and Great Master of the Four. The King of Wuyue requested the posthumous title 'Venerable Quanzhen'.
