The appraisal says: Some, seeing Master Liang's statement in the general rules of his lineage that the two Weis 'transmitted it in silence and their teaching was not practiced', then conclude that they were taciturn, without words, and merely sat in realization. However, this remark of Master Liang's was meant to magnify the grandeur of Jingxi's composing texts and propagating the Way, and thus he expediently assigned weight to one and lightened the other. In essence, lecturing on the sūtras and sitting in meditation were never not practiced side by side. Were it not so, for what purpose would a thousand people have listened and studied under Fahua, and countless people have sought the Way under Tiangong? From this we know that to say their teaching was not practiced is an overstatement.
