Dhyāna Master Huiyao was of the Qi family, a native of Xiangyang. At first he attended Nanyue for several years, fully attaining the subtlety of the contemplation of mind. Nanyue verified him, saying: 'Your attainment in the contemplation of the principle of the real mark is already profound. You should follow wherever you go to teach and transform, so as to fulfill your original aspiration.' When Nanyue entered extinction, the master went to Baqiu and sighed, saying: 'The meditation methods are rarely heard in this place; they ought to be expounded.' Dhyāna Master Daoyi invited him to reside at Daoyin Temple. He dedicated himself to serene meditation and did not engage in worldly affairs; for fourteen years he never stepped outside the gate. One day he said to others: 'I do not wish to trouble the assembly; I want to go to Neihua Temple to live in seclusion.' The assembly tried to retain him, but he did not comply. After three years, he manifested illness, and saw Nanyue and Xiancheng coming to welcome him, saying: 'You may travel together with us to the Pure Land.' He then sat cross-legged and entered quiescence. His intact body was buried at Neihua.
