Dhyāna Master Dengguan was from the Sun clan of Fuyang. He received the mind contemplation from the Master of Wisdom. Dwelling at Tiantai, he constantly recited the Lotus Sūtra. In the winter of the ninth year of Zhenguan, Faren Monastery in Yuhang invited the master to lecture. On the New Year’s Day of the following year, a figure in royal robes arrived, calling himself the spirit of the Gaoting Shrine. Coming to pay homage to the master, he said: 'Yesterday the Dhyāna Master passed through the temple courtyard; as your disciple was just then on circuit, I was unable to welcome you. Today I have specially come from afar solely to seek the precepts.' The master at once asked for a censer, burned incense, and conferred the Great Bodhisattva Precepts upon him, after which he bowed in gratitude and withdrew. In the middle of the night of the following day, the master bathed, changed his robes, sat cross-legged facing west, and recited the revered titles of the Three Holy Ones and the title of the Master of Wisdom, each more than a hundred times. He also expounded the Dharma gate of the threefold contemplation for Dharma Master Hui, adding: 'This I personally received from the Great Master's oral teaching.' Having finished speaking, he passed away.
