Chan Master Sengzhao, hearing of Nanyue's wonderfully virtuous contemplation of mind, went specially to pay homage to him. Whatever was pointed out and taught to him, he comprehended and understood completely. Later, by order of Nanyue, he practiced the Lotus Samādhi to dissolve former obstacles. When his wondrous practice was nearly perfected, he saw the great being Samantabhadra riding the white elephant king and emitting light to bear witness, and he was also moved to have Avalokiteśvara expound the Dharma for him. Thereupon, he suddenly awakened to the profound import and obtained unhindered eloquence. Within the assembly, the Master was foremost in ascetic practice and dhyāna meditation. He once used a pinch of salt from the assembly to make food and drink for a fast, considering it of no concern since the amount used was negligible. Later, while practicing the Fangdeng repentance, he suddenly saw a vision arise; calculating three years, it had increased to several tens of bushels. He urgently sold his robes to buy salt and repay the assembly, and only then did the vision vanish. When Nanyue entered quiescence, the Master led the assembly to practice the path just as in former times.
