Third, animals (tiryagyoni): Most dwell in rivers and oceans, living in chaotic confusion like dregs of wine, the large eating the small and the small eating the large, terrifying one another. Due to the ocean waves, their dwellings are unfixed; or they reside among humans and gods. Regarding their lifespan: the longest is like that of dragon kings (nāgarājas) whose lifespan is half an antarakalpa; the shortest is like that of gnats and the like whose lifespan is a single kṣaṇa. Their bodily sizes are unfixed.
