On the eighth day of the fourth month, Xuanzang led the monks and nuns of the capital, equipped with banners, jeweled carriages, incense, flowers, and Sanskrit ceremonial implements, knocking at the Fanglin Gate to welcome the imperially composed stele. An edict ordered the nine ensembles of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, the entertainment troupes of Chang'an and Wannian counties, and the imperial relatives, marquis, princes, and elders to escort it. On that day, because of rain, it could not proceed. On the fourteenth day, it was finally welcomed. The Imperial Annals of the Old History states: "The Emperor proceeded to the tower of the Anfu Gate to watch. Dharma Master Xuanzang welcomed the imperially composed stele of the Great Ci'en Monastery and led the procession using Tianzhu ritual forms. His followers were exceedingly numerous, and the Emperor looked upon them with great joy."
