(9) In the fifth month, Dharma Master Xuanzang fell ill. An edict commanded Jiang Xiaozhang, Court Physician of the Palace Medical Service, and the acupuncturist Shangguan Cong to give their full attention to treating his illness. Messengers of the Northern Gate were also dispatched to monitor his condition and relay reports. Xuanzang took the opportunity to explain that during the previous reign, the ranks of the Buddhists had been placed below those of the Daoists, and that the late Emperor in his later years had promised to rectify this; furthermore, that at the beginning of Yonghui, an edict had ordered that monks and nuns whose offenses were difficult to determine should be investigated according to secular law. Fearing that his illness might leave him decrepit and forever separated from the heavenly countenance, Xuanzang had these matters reported through an inner messenger. On the same day, an imperial messenger reported back, saying: "Regarding what was stated: the ranks of Buddhists and Daoists were determined by the previous reign, so the matter must be deliberated. As for the edict on conforming to secular law, it shall immediately be abolished. You should put your mind at ease and convalesce, Master." Xuanzang's illness soon recovered.
