(42. Wushen [708 CE]) The Great Being Saṃgha of Sizhou was summoned by imperial decree into the palace to receive offerings. He ordained the three men Huiyan, Hui'an, and Muxa to be his attendants. The emperor personally wrote the name plaque for his dwelling monastery, which read "Puguangwang" (Universal Light King). Before long, he was moved to reside at Jianfu Monastery. The following year, the capital region suffered a drought. An imperial decree commanded the Great Being to bring rain. Saṃgha scattered and sprinkled water from a vase, whereupon dense clouds billowed up from where he stayed, and heavy rain poured down. In the second month of the next year, he demonstrated nirvāṇa. His age was eighty-three. His divine countenance appeared as if alive. An imperial order directed that his body be modeled and a stupa erected at Jianfu Monastery; immediately, a foul odor filled the whole city. The emperor burned incense and prayed, promising to send him back to the Huai region. As soon as the words ended, an extraordinary fragrance filled the air. The entire capital marveled at it. His whole body was then conveyed back to Puguangwang Monastery in Sizhou to erect a stupa. The emperor once asked Master Fayun Wan回, "What kind of person is Saṃgha?" He replied, "He is an incarnation of the Great Being Guanyin, nothing more." His wondrously transformative deeds are fully detailed in the biography written by Jiang Yingshu. The Great Master came from the Western Regions. In the time of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang, he came to Chang'an and Luoyang to carry out his teaching. Passing through the regions of Wu and Chu, he carried a willow branch in his hand, blending in among the clergy. Someone asked, "What is Master's surname?" He immediately replied, "My surname is He." The person asked again, "What country is Master from?" The Master said, "I am from the country of He." Soon he wished to construct a monastery along the Si River. A native of Suzhou, from the Heba clan, renounced his residence. The Master said, "This was originally a Buddhist sanctuary." He ordered the ground to be excavated, and they indeed found an ancient stele that read: "Xiangji Monastery, founded by Li Longjian of Qi." They also obtained a golden statue. The crowd called it the Tathāgata Dīpaṃkara. The Master said, "It is the Buddha Puguangwang." Consequently, this was made the monastery's plaque. During the Qianfu era, he was posthumously titled Great Master Zhengsheng.
