12.90

（四十三　己酉）　是歲召律師道岸入宮。為妃主授歸戒。因留禁中。別日帝至。諸師皆辟席。岸獨逡巡長揖而已。帝高其量圖形于林光宮。御製讚曰。戒珠皎潔惠流清淨。身局五篇心融八定。學妙真宗貫通實性。維持法務綱紀德政。律藏冀兮傳芳。像教因而光盛。時以為榮焉。

(43. Jiyou [709 CE]) In this year, Vinaya Master Dao'an was summoned to enter the palace to administer the refuges and precepts to the imperial consorts and princesses. Because of this, he stayed within the forbidden palace. On another day the emperor arrived, and all the masters vacated their seats; only An paced calmly and gave a deep bow. The emperor esteemed his high capacity and had his portrait painted in the Linguang Palace. The imperial eulogy said: "The precept-jewel is pure and brilliant; the flow of wisdom is clear and undefiled. / His body is disciplined by the five chapters [of the Vinaya]; his mind is merged in the eight absorptions. / His learning penetrates the wondrous true doctrine; he completely realizes the true nature. / Maintaining the affairs of the Dharma, he orders the virtuous governance. / We hope the Vinaya piṭaka transmits its fragrance, / and the semblance teaching thereby shines forth gloriously." At the time, this was considered a great honor.
