([Kaiyuan], Year 23, [cyclical year] Yihai) [735 CE]: In the twenty-third year, Tripiṭaka Master Śubhakarasiṃha passed away at the age of ninety-nine. An imperial decree ordered Li Xian, Aide of the Court of State Ceremonial, to supervise the funeral arrangements. A stūpa was erected at Guanghua Temple on the West Mountain of Longmen to enshrine his whole body. Śubhakarasiṃha originally belonged to the Śākya clan, a descendant of King Amṛtodana. He renounced the throne to leave the householders' life; his virtue, Way, and renown were the foremost in India. Wherever he preached the Dharma, there were invariably miraculous signs. Earlier, when expounding the Vairocanābhisambodhi-sūtra in the country of Oḍra, the entire assembly suddenly saw in the sky the four golden characters 'Vai-ro-ca-na', each about a zhang high, lined up for a long time before vanishing. He also once crossed the Dragon River, where a camel carrying sūtras sank into the water. Fearing the loss of the sūtras, Śubhakarasiṃha plunged into the water after it. Thereupon the Dragon King invited him into his palace to preach the Dharma, but he did not consent. The king's request was so earnest and persistent that he stayed for three nights before emerging; not a single character of the Sanskrit manuscripts carried was dampened. His spiritual wonders were mostly of this sort.
