[34, dinghai] This year, Tripiṭaka Master Amoghavajra returned from the Western Regions. He was summoned into the palace to erect an altar and bestow abhiṣeka on the Emperor, and was granted the title of National Preceptor Zhizang. At that time, the thaumaturge Luo Siyuan enjoyed imperial favor through his arts. An edict ordered that he and Amoghavajra test their abilities. On another day, they met in an informal palace hall. Siyuan held a ruyi scepter and pointed it at him while conversing. Amoghavajra reached over, took the ruyi, and threw it to the ground, telling Siyuan to lift it. Siyuan exerted all his strength but could not lift it. The Emperor intended to pick it up himself. Amoghavajra smiled and said: 'Third Brother, that is merely the shadow of the ruyi.' He then held up the ruyi in his hand and showed it to them. Siyuan submitted in admiration and desisted. Whenever Amoghavajra prayed, he always spread an embroidered seat, held a wooden deity in his hand, recited dhāraṇī, and cast it. The deity stood up on the seat by itself. When the fourfold assembly gathered around to look, they inevitably saw the deity's eyes and lips blinking and moving. Even what belongs to the power of heaven and earth could be altered by his prayers. The court and the commonality revered him like a Buddha. In this year, a phoenix appeared.
