(Forty-one) In the fifth month, the rebel bandit An Lushan captured Chang'an. Xuanzong fled to Shu. Some say that when the imperial carriage first entered Shu, there was a regional official who had joined Lushan's rebellion. This man had once served as governor of Langzhou, and his portrait hung by the roadside. Xuanzong suddenly saw it, fell into an uncontrollable rage, and commanded an attendant official to cut off the head of the portrait with a sword. At that time, the man was in Shanxi; without his knowing it, his head suddenly fell to the ground for no reason. When the imperial carriage arrived at Chengdu and crossed the Wanli Bridge, [Xuanzong] understood Yixing's prophecy of the 'gold box' and the 'dāngguī' [tribute/return]. Thereupon he was cleansed of all distress and forgot his sorrows, so it is said.
