(Forty-two; dingyou [757 CE]) In the first month, An Lushan's son Qingxu had Li Zhuer assassinate Lushan and set himself up [as emperor]. In the ninth month, Deputy Commander-in-Chief Guo Ziyi crushed An Qingxu and recovered the capital. In the tenth month, the emperor arrived from Lingwu. In the twelfth month, the Retired Emperor arrived from Western Shu. Soon afterward, an altar was established in the inner imperial palace, where lectures, recitations, and praises were conducted with great solemnity. Prime Minister Zhang Gao remonstrated, saying, 'The blessings of the Son of Heaven consist essentially in nourishing the people, so as to improve customs through a single unified realm. We have never heard that trivial Buddhist rituals can bring about great peace. May Your Majesty take non-action (asaṃskṛta) as your mind, and not disturb your imperial thoughts with the Hīnayāna.' The emperor did not accept this. Soon he decreed that temples be built on each of the Five Sacred Peaks and that monks of lofty conduct be chosen to preside over them. Laymen who could recite five hundred sheets of scripture were permitted to be ordained as monks; alternatively, those who paid one hundred strings of cash could request an ordination certificate to shave their heads and receive the status of having passed the classics examination, and both capitals were pacified. Furthermore, in the various prefectures of the metropolitan regions, over ten thousand monks and Daoists were ordained upon payment of money. The practice of purchasing ordination certificates began from this. The era name was changed to Qianyuan, reverting to the designation of *nian*. Shi Siming killed An Qingxu and rebelled once again.
