14.14

（九　庚戌）　西域大耳三藏至京師。自云得他心慧眼。帝令入光宅寺。請國師惠忠試驗。忠問。汝得他心通耶。對曰。不敢。忠曰。汝道老僧即今在什麼處。三藏云。和上是一國之師。何得往天津橋看弄猢孫。又問。老僧即今在什麼處。三藏曰。和上是一國之師。何得去西川看競渡。忠第三問語亦如前三藏良久罔知去處。忠叱曰。這野狐精。他心通在什麼處。三藏無對。

(9. Gengxu [770 CE]) The Tripiṭaka Master Da'er (Big Ears) from the Western Regions arrived at the capital, claiming of himself that he had attained the knowledge of others' minds and the wisdom eye. The Emperor ordered him to enter Guangzhai Monastery and invited National Preceptor Huizhong to test him. Zhong asked, "Have you attained the supernormal power of knowing others' minds?" He replied, "I would not dare claim so." Zhong said, "Tell me, where is this old monk right now?" The Tripiṭaka Master said, "The reverend is the teacher of a whole country; why have you gone to Tianjin Bridge to watch a monkey show?" Zhong asked again, "Where is this old monk right now?" The Tripiṭaka Master said, "The reverend is the teacher of a whole country; why have you gone to Xichuan to watch the boat races?" Zhong asked a third time, phrasing it as before. For a long time, the Tripiṭaka Master did not know where he had gone. Zhong scolded him, saying, "You wild fox spirit! Where is your knowledge of others' minds now?" The Tripiṭaka Master had no reply.
