(8. Jiyou [769 CE]) Chan Master Niutou Huizhong showed his passing. The master received the Dharma from Master Zhiwei and was the sixth patriarch of the Niutou school. Throughout his life, he never changed his single patch-robe and his only utensil was a single iron cauldron. He once had two granaries of grain offered to the Saṃgha; when thieves lurked in wait, tigers guarded them. The county magistrate Zhang Xun entered the mountain to pay him homage and asked, "What disciples does the master have?" He replied, "I have three to five." Xun said, "May they be seen?" The master knocked on the couch three times, and three tigers bounded out roaring. Xun retreated in terror. Later, when the master moved to Zhuangyan Monastery and was about to construct a Dharma hall, there was an ancient tree with a flock of magpies nesting in it. The master said to the nests, "A hall is to be built on this spot; you may leave quickly." When he finished speaking, the flock of magpies moved their nests to another tree. When laying the foundation, two spirits set its four corners, covertly assisting in the night's labor so that it was completed in no time. From this, students gathered like clouds. The master had a verse on calming the mind: 'Person and phenomena are both purified; / Good and evil are both forgotten. / The straight mind is the genuine; / This is the bodhimaṇḍa.' Approaching his end at this time, in front of his stone chamber the tree where he hung his cauldron and the vine where he hung his robe withered and died without cause. The master assembled the community, and after performing the poṣadha, he shaved his hair and bathed his body. That evening, auspicious clouds covered his courtyard, and in the air there was the sound of heavenly music. At dawn, he serenely passed away while seated. In an instant, wind and rain violently arose, snapping forest trees, and a white rainbow pierced the crags and ravines.
