(Gengzi) In the first month, the Emperor took an elixir of immortality and became dry and agitated. The inner eunuchs feared execution, and the inner palace was deep and secluded; hence an unforeseen calamity occurred. The *Zizhi tongjian* says: 'Emperor Xianzong’s intelligence and decisiveness were endowed by his heaven-given nature. He selected and appointed the loyal and good, and welcomed fine counsel. Though his armies were exhausted, his wealth depleted, and dissenting opinions converged like spokes on an axle, he did not doubt. Though rebels arose in the capital and slaughtered the commander-in-chief, he was not afraid. In the end he was able to take Lingwu and Xiazhou, pacify Jiannan, execute the rebels of Zhexi, capture those of Zelu, pacify Huainan, and recover Qi and Lu. Thereupon the deeply rooted rebels throughout the realm all looked back like wolves and hunched like rats, sending hostages, ceding land, and prostrating themselves at court. The anxieties of a hundred years were cleared away in a single day. Yet he was negligent in guarding against slight beginnings, and disaster arose from within his own armpits. How lamentable!'
