(Xinyou) Emperor Wuzong, Yan, changed the reign era to Huichang. (He was the fifth son of Muzong; his mother was Empress Dowager Wei. When Qiu Shiliang was on the brink of death, he told his cohorts, "The Son of Heaven is extravagant, profligate, and devoid of the Way; do not allow him to read books or draw close to Confucians." Later he ingested elixir pills; his temperament was impatient and hasty, and his joy and anger were unpredictable. He died at the age of thirty-four, having reigned for six years.) From his childhood, the Emperor had disliked the Buddhist teachings. In the first month of this year, he ascended the throne. In the seventh month, in Guizhou, a horse gave birth to a three-legged foal. Coming to the autumn, in the ninth month, he summoned eighty-one Daoist priests, including Zhao Guizhen, into the forbidden palace to conduct the Golden Register Daoist rite in the Three Halls. In the winter, in the tenth month, the Emperor went to the Three Halls, ascended the Mysterious Altar of the Nine Immortals, and personally received the registers of the teachings. Wang Zhe, Exhorter of the Left, remonstrated: "At the beginning of your royal enterprise, you ought not revere and trust [Daoism] to excess." The Emperor did not accept his advice.
