(35) In the fourth month of this year, the Yuqing Zhaoyang Palace was completed, and Daoist statues were enshrined there. The Emperor went to the palace to perform rites. In the seventh year, it was renamed the Yuqing Shenxiao Palace. At that time, the flourishing of Daoism began with the Daoist Xu Zhichang, who was granted the title Master of Chongxu [Empty Serenity]. Xu Shouxin was granted Master of Xujing [Void Stillness]. Liu Hunkang was granted Master of Baozhen Guanmiao Chonghe [Preserving the True, Contemplating the Wondrous, Empty Harmony]. Later, they were all posthumously awarded the rank of Grand Master of Palace Counsel (Taizhong Dafu). On the gui-wei day of the eleventh month, at the suburban sacrifice, the Emperor tucked in the large jade tablet and held the primal jade tablet, preceded by a hundred Daoists bearing ceremonial regalia. Twenty-six Daoist ranks were established: "Gentleman" (xiansheng) and "Retired Scholar" (chushi) of eight, six, four, or two characters corresponded to ranks from Grand Master of the Palace (Zhongdafu) down to Gentleman for Managing Affairs (Jiangshilang). In the early Chonghe era, Daoist official titles were separately established, from Grand Master of Great Emptiness (Taixu Dafu) down to Gentleman of the Golden Altar (Jintanlang), sixteen grades in all, equivalent to civil officials from Grand Master of the Palace down to Gentleman of Decorous Conduct (Digonglang). Daoist duty positions ranged from Attendant of the Presence at the Chonghe Hall (Chonghedian Shichen) to Scripture Collator at the Ningshen Hall (Ningshendian Jiaojing), eleven grades in all. Attendant of the Presence was equivalent to Auxiliary Academician (Daizhi); Document Examiner (Jianji) was equivalent to Senior Compiler (Xiuzhuan); Scripture Collator was equivalent to Auxiliary in the Pavilion (Zhige). All were granted commissions of appointment. (From the *Song shi*.)
