Pingshan said: "Alas! Master Cheng overheard words on the tenets of the Hīnayāna teachings, was unable to trust them fully, and cursorily took their claims to attack them in turn. How could he know the esoteric purport of the Vimalakīrti and the Avataṃsaka? Mistaking an arhat for a Buddha and failing to understand the truth, he hastily hurled insults and abuse. How could he recognize the secret practices of Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra? The Mahāsattvas of the Perfect Teaching know that sentient beings are fundamentally empty, yet deliver them; they know that the lands are fundamentally pure, yet adorn them. They do not obstruct world-transcending dharmas with worldly dharmas, nor do they destroy worldly dharmas with world-transcending dharmas. They regard worldly dharmas as being identical to world-transcending dharmas, and world-transcending dharmas as being identical to worldly dharmas. The eighty-four thousand afflictions of worldly toil are themselves the eighty-four thousand cool liberations. How could this be limited only to Avalokiteśvara's thirty-two manifestations and Sudhana's fifty-three spiritual encounters? In every thought-moment of sentient beings, there are constantly Buddhas realizing right awakening. The benevolent master merely generates distinctions on his own. So long as there is no notion of a self, notion of a person, notion of a sentient being, or notion of an enduring life, what harm is there in appearing in the body of a householder, an elder, or a magistrate? I have heard that among those who defame the Buddha and slander the Dharma, there are beings of hidden expedient means and great compassion who act out of reverse practice and demonic speech. Could Master Cheng be such a person? If not, he is an unintelligent being obstructed by worldly intelligence and sophistry, who fully incurs the karmic retribution of the Avīci Hell. How lamentable and irredeemable!"
