上蔡曰。學佛者欲免輪回。是利心私而已矣。此心有止而太虛無盡。必為輪回推之於始。何所付受其終何時間斷。且天下人物各有數矣。

Shangcai said: "Those who study Buddhism wish to avoid saṃsāra; this is merely selfish desire for benefit. This mind has a limit, whereas the great void is inexhaustible. If one must infer saṃsāra from its beginning, to what was it granted? When does its end cease? Moreover, the people and things of the world each have their fixed allotments."
