20.118

屏山曰。佛說輪回愛為根本。有愛我者亦愛涅槃。不知愛者真生死故。何利心之有。彼圓覺性非作非止非任非滅。無始無終無能無所。豈有間斷哉。故眾生本來成佛。生死涅槃猶如昨夢。夢中人物豈有數乎。上蔡夢中之人猶作夢語。不識圓覺認為太虛悲夫。

Pingshan said: "The Buddha taught that craving is the root of saṃsāra. Those who crave the self also crave nirvāṇa, unaware that craving is true birth-and-death; what desire for benefit is there? The nature of Complete Enlightenment is neither produced nor stopped, neither indulged nor extinguished; it has neither beginning nor end, neither subject nor object. How could there be any interruption? Therefore sentient beings are fundamentally enlightened Buddhas; birth-and-death and nirvāṇa are like yesterday's dream. How could the persons and things within a dream have fixed allotments? Shangcai, a person within a dream, still utters dream-talk, failing to recognize Complete Enlightenment and mistaking it for the great void. How sad!"
