Anzheng Wangquan said: "In the retribution of gains and losses, in the dark unseen realm, there is indeed not necessarily no administrator presiding over them. The Sages probed deeply into its subtleties, yet omitted this and did not discuss it. Only Sages transcend forms and numbers while employing forms and numbers, wandering with the Creator of Things; worthy men are not yet able to transcend and be exempt from them. This is merely regarding the retributions received; it can serve as a great warning." He also said: "Confucianism and Buddhism have similar destinations, but their applications are far apart; therefore their functions are completely distinct. Although this moves the pivotal mechanism and fashions Heaven and Earth, in the end it does not startle the three luminaries or shroud their virtues. Applying their strengths to the Central Realm is like driving a high carriage to Yue or wearing a court cap among the Hu barbarians—it is decisively inappropriate. Confucians ought only to use the Supreme Ultimate for governing the world; yet on the contrary they become entirely without trace, transcending numbers and forms—how can they willingly engage in useless learning?"
