帝問元一云。孔老徒眾何以至少。如來徒眾何以至多。元一奏云。富嫌千口少。貧恨一身多。
The Emperor asked Yuanyi: 'Why are the followers of Confucius and Laozi so few, while the followers of the Tathāgata are so numerous?' Yuanyi memorialized: 'The wealthy find a thousand mouths too few; the poor resent a single body as too much.'
