(23. Xinyou [241 CE]) Kang Senghui arrived in Wu. According to the *Records of Wu*: in the fourth year of Chiwu, there was a son of the grand prime minister of the Kangju kingdom, surnamed Kang and named Senghui. He abandoned the secular world and took the black robes, taking traveling and converting people as his mission. Traveling as far as Jiankang, he erected a thatched hut, set up an image, and practiced the Way. When the people of Wu first saw him, they regarded him as bizarre and strange, and the officials reported it to the throne. The ruler intended to imprison him, but summoned him to inquire into the circumstances. [Senghui] came forward and said: "The Great Master, the Tathāgata, passed away a thousand years ago, yet his numinous bones and sarīras manifest divine efficacy without limit. Formerly, King Aśoka revered them and built 84,000 stupas; these are the vestiges of his conversion." [Sun] Quan, thinking he was boasting to him, said: "If the sarīra can be obtained, I shall build a stupa for it. If there is no verification, the state has its established punishments." Senghui requested a grace period of seven days and said to his followers: "The rise or fall of the Great Dharma hinges upon this single act. You must concentrate your efforts, cleanse your minds, observe purity through fasting, and pray earnestly." When the time came, there was no verification, so he extended it for another seven days, but still there was no response. Quan was about to have him boiled alive. Senghui meditated silently: "The Buddha is renowned for true compassion; how could he turn away from me?" He further requested an extension, praying with his life on the line for another seven days. The assembly was terrified and disconsolate. At the fifth drum, a clinking sound was heard; they arose, looked into the vase, and saw five-colored radiance bursting forth. He called out loudly, saying: "Indeed, our wish has been fulfilled!" At dawn, he presented it. Quan gathered with his ministers to look, and marveled: "It is a rare auspicious omen in the world!" Senghui further said: "The divine power of the sarīra is such that nothing in all the world can destroy it." Quan ordered strong men to strike it with a sledgehammer; the anvil broke, yet the bright light remained as before. Thereupon, he built a stupa, ordained monks, and founded a monastery, naming the neighborhood Buddha Village, and calling the monastery Jianchu Monastery, reverently inviting Senghui to reside there.
