(24) Kan Ze, courtesy name Derun, was a man of Shanyin in Kuaiji. His family had been farmers for generations. Ze was fond of learning, but living in poverty without funds, he often hired himself out as a copyist to provide for himself. As soon as he finished copying, he was able to recite it; through this, he read widely in all the texts. When Yu Fan saw him, he praised him, saying: "Master Kan is outstanding and eminent, of the same caliber as [Dong] Zhongshu and [Yang] Ziyun." Serving Wu, he attained the post of Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince. When Senghui entered Wu, the Lord of Wu thereupon asked Ze: "In which year under Emperor Ming of the Han did Buddhism enter the Central Plains? For what reason did it not reach the eastern regions?" Ze said: "The Buddhadharma first arrived in the eleventh year of Yongping; counting down to the present fourth year of Chiwu, it has been 170 years. In the fourteenth year of Yongping, the Daoist Chu Shanxin and others from the Five Sacred Peaks begged to contest powers with the Western monks. Thereupon Shanxin, defeated in his falsehoods, died, and his disciples took his corpse to be buried at the Southern Peak. Generally, people of the Central Plains were not permitted by regulation to leave home, and there was no one to propagate it. Added to this were years of enduring chaos before it finally reached our state." The Lord of Wu said: "Confucius instituted scriptures and teachings to instruct future enterprises; Laozi and Zhuangzi cultivated themselves for self-enjoyment, roaming free in mountains and forests, returning their minds to tranquility. Why serve the Buddha?" Ze said: "The two teachings of Confucius and Laozi take Heaven as their model and institute functions according to it, not daring to contravene Heaven. As for the teachings of the Buddha, all the gods revere and practice them, not daring to contravene the Buddha. Judged by this, their relative superiority is evident."
