(8. Bingzi) Emperor Wen visited the Winding Waters, where the ministers and high officials gathered together. The Emperor ordered them to compose poems. The śramaṇa Huiguan’s poem was completed first and presented; its lines possessed an extraordinary and sublime resonance. The Emperor was delighted and showed it to the civil and military officials, who all marveled at and admired his talent. Huiguan, together with Huiyan, Xie Lingyun, and others, carefully revised and established the text of the Great Parinirvāṇa Sūtra, considerably adding to and pruning its wording. Because of this, he dreamed that a divine being rebuked him, saying: “How dare you presumptuously use worldly sentiments to lightly profane the sacred scripture?” Huiguan and the others were terrified and stopped.
