(9) At that time, there was a monk named Huilin who, by virtue of his talent and learning, found favor with the Emperor and took part in deciding governmental affairs; he was then referred to as the “Black-Robed Chancellor.” As a result, carriages and canopies before his gate frequently left no room to set foot. Huilin was presumptuously arrogant; upon meeting dukes and ministers, he merely exchanged perfunctory pleasantries. He authored the Discourse on the White and the Black, slandering the Buddha and betraying the teaching, and consequently suffered visible retribution: his skin and flesh festered and rotted, and he died after lingering for years.
