(Thirty-seven) The upāsaka Lu Fahe of Jingshan had retired in his youth to Qingxi Mountain in Jiangling, serving the śramaṇas diligently and observing the etiquette of a disciple. When he grew up and traveled, his speech carried the accent of Ba and Chu, and his countenance was extraordinary. On account of his preeminent conduct, he was esteemed by the Prince of Xiangdong of Liang; with leisure and detachment, he was deeply revered by all the grandees. When Hou Jing first surrendered, Fahe knew he would certainly rebel, and told Zhu Yuanying, who did not comprehend his meaning. Not long after, Jing besieged the capital, and Yuanying sought a stratagem. Fahe said, 'To pick fruit, one must wait until it is ripe.' When Jing sent the general Ren Yue to attack the Prince of Xiangdong, Fahe asked for troops to resist him. Facing the enemy camp across Chisha Lake, the rebels set fire to the huts by taking advantage of the wind. Fahe waved a white feather against the wind, and the wind immediately reversed; Yue's army suffered a great rout. The soldiers searched for Yue but could not find him. Fahe said, 'At the edge of the sandbar is a water post; Yue is beneath it. Go and seize him.' They indeed captured Yue, who was clinging to the post with his head tilted upward and his nose exposed. Fahe spared him, saying to the Prince, 'In the future he will be of service.' Yue later indeed rendered loyal service. Wherever Fahe traveled along rivers and lakes, he would establish life-release ponds and strictly forbid the taking of life. When the Prince of Xiangdong ascended the throne, becoming Emperor Yuan, he appointed Fahe Regional Inspector of Yingzhou. Earlier, Fahe wished to launch a grand expedition to pacify the Wei, but the Emperor did not grant permission. Fahe smiled and said, 'I have never coveted the seat of the Devarājas Śakra or Brahmā; how could I covet the throne of a human king? It is only that I have karmic affinity with Your Majesty from the time of the Buddha King of Emptiness. If you cannot employ me, what can be done about karma?' When the Emperor was defeated, he went over to Qi. Emperor Xuan of Qi was delighted by his arrival, made him Grand Defender, and bestowed a mansion upon him. Fahe begged to convert it into a Buddhist monastery and took residence in a side chamber himself. Daily holding an incense burner, he practiced walking meditation, venerated the Buddha, burned incense, and sat in deep contemplation, foretelling the day of his death. When the time arrived, he passed away while sitting. His corpse shrank by about three feet. He inscribed on the wall: 'A ten-year Son of Heaven is barely acceptable; a hundred-day Son of Heaven is urgent as fire; one-year Sons of Heaven sit in succession.' He also wrote: 'Two mothers give birth to three Heavens; two Heavens share five years,' referring to Empress Dowager Lou. People were terrified and whitewashed and scraped it, but in the end they could not erase it. Such were his supernatural marvels.
