(3. Guihai to jiazi) When the prince was ten years old, he wrestled with his kinsmen, throwing an elephant outside the city with his hand and shooting an arrow through nine layers of iron drums. The Bhagavān manifested leaving the household: the prince toured the four gates, seeing birth, old age, sickness, and death; at the northern gate he saw a renunciant and gave rise to a mind of joy. On the night of the eighth day of the second month, a Śuddhāvāsa god announced: "The time has come for the prince to leave the household." Thereupon, riding his horse, he leapt over the city wall, reached Mount Daṇḍa, drew his sword, cut off his hair, entered Mount Meru to the place of Ārāḍa Kālāma, and practiced the absorption of the sphere of nothingness.
