(13) At that time, there was a brāhmaṇa in the Kingdom of Siṃhala named Congming ('Cleverness'), who was the leader of the non-Buddhist traditions. Hearing that [Kumāra]jīva was in Guanzhong, he brought books laden on beasts and asked to debate with the monks. The śramaṇas of Guanzhong looked at each other, at a loss. [Kumāra]jīva said to Dharma Master Daorong: 'You can take him on.' Daorong, seeing that he had not yet read the non-Buddhist scriptures, secretly sent someone to record the table of contents of those books, and upon a single glance, he memorized them. A date was set for the debate. The ruler of Qin and his high officials gathered in great numbers. The brāhmaṇa boasted of his wide reading. Daorong enumerated the brāhmaṇa's books, and added to them three times as many of the Qin territory's classics and histories. [Kumāra]jīva took advantage of the victory to tease him: 'Have you not heard that there are learned scholars in Qin? How dare you come lightly from afar!' Thereupon, the brāhmaṇa was shamed into submission, bowed twice at Daorong's feet, and departed.
