There was a śramaṇa named Tanchao who resided on Mount Lingyuan in Qiantang. One evening an extraordinary being arrived and said, 'This realm is blessed by your presence, Master; it is the good fortune of all living beings. However, the people of Fuyang dug into the foot of the mountain for no reason and breached the abode of the dragons. The dragons were enraged and have withheld rain, and it has now been two hundred days. We wish the Dharma Master would go once to instruct the dragons and plead for blessings on behalf of the common people. Would you be willing?' Chao said, 'This is an affair of the dānapatis; what can I do?' The deity said, 'My disciple’s strength can exhale clouds, but cannot bring forth rain.' Chao consented. He went to Mount Chiting and expounded the Dharma for the dragons, and before long a great downpour fell. He then stayed at Linxi. When the county magistrate heard that Chao was there, he prepared a boat to welcome him; but Chao fled back to Lingyuan that very day.
