(5. Jiashan) On the eighth day of the fourth month in the third year of Tianjian, the Emperor led more than twenty thousand monastics and laypeople up to the Chongyun Hall, where he personally composed a text to make vows, begging to rely on the power of the Buddha to abandon Daoism forever and no longer venerate it. It said in brief: "The sūtras state that to arouse the bodhicitta is none other than the mind of the Buddha; all scattered good deeds cannot serve as an analogy. Your disciple Xiao Yan has recently fallen into neglect and error, indulging in serving the Old Master (Laozi); across successive generations, we have inherited and plunged deeply into this deviant teaching. Now I abandon old habits and take refuge in the correct cause, vowing that in future lifetimes I will leave household life as a youth, broadly propagate the teachings of the sūtras, convert and deliver sentient beings, and together realize bodhi. I would rather sink long into evil paths within the true Dharma than delight in taking refuge in Laozi to attain fleeting immortality. Advancing in the Mahāyāna mind, I forever depart from deviant views. I pray that all Buddhas bear witness and that bodhisattvas take me under their protection. Your disciple Xiao Yan bows with reverence."
