On the eleventh day, he issued an edict to the Chancellery, saying: "It is taught in the Great Sūtra that among the ninety-six varieties [of non-Buddhist paths], only the single Buddha-path is the correct path; the rest are all deviant. I have abandoned Daoism in order to serve the correct, inner path of all the Buddhas. Let all the dukes and ministers who are able to enter into this vow each arouse bodhicitta. Although Laozi, the Duke of Zhou, Confucius, and others were disciples of the Tathāgata, their transforming traces were already deviant; they are merely worldly goodness and cannot transform the ordinary into the sagely." (This is recorded in full in the Hongming ji).
