The Eleventh Patriarch, the Venerable Puṇyayaśas: a native of Pāṭaliputra, of the Gautama clan. His father was Baoshen. Having obtained the Dharma from the Venerable Pārśva, he arrived in Vārāṇasī. The Great Being Aśvaghoṣa took refuge and sought ordination. The patriarch said to the assembly: 'This Great Being was formerly the king of the kingdom of Vaiśālī. In that kingdom, there was a kind of person naked like horses; the king exercised supernatural powers and divided his body to become silkworms, so that they obtained clothing. Later he was reborn in Central India; the horse-people were touched with longing and neighed mournfully, hence he was called Aśvaghoṣa ("Horse-Neigh"). At that time, the Great Being consoled the assembly with a verse: / "I saw that you had no clothing / And gave birth to a mind to preserve, benefit, and protect; / Displaying transformation within the silkworm cocoon, / You should obtain all salvations." / Soon after, the patriarch said to the Great Being: 'The Tathāgata prophesied: "Six hundred years after my cessation, there will be a worthy named Aśvaghoṣa who in the kingdom of Vārāṇasī will crush heterodox paths, deliver countless people, and succeed me in propagating conversion." Now is precisely the time.' He then told him: 'The Tathāgata's Treasury of the Great Dharma Eye is now entrusted to you. Listen to my verse: / "Delusion and awakening are like concealment and manifestation; / Light and darkness are not separated. / Now I entrust to you the Dharma of concealment and manifestation: / It is neither one nor two." / Having entrusted the Dharma, he displayed supernatural transformations and peacefully entered complete cessation. The assembly erected a jeweled stūpa to enshrine his whole body. This corresponded to the era of King An of Zhou (Zhengzong ji).
