The Twenty-Second Patriarch, the Great Being Manorhita, was the son of King Changzizai of the country of Nadi. At age thirty he encountered the Great Being Vasubandhu, left home, and received the Dharma. He traveled to Western India. The king of that country was named Deda, of the Gautama clan, who was diligent and energetic in the Buddha Vehicle. One day, at the place where he was practicing the Way, he saw a small stūpa, one cubit and four inches high, dark blue-black in color. No one in the crowd could lift it. The king thereupon held a great assembly of the three groups of those practicing brahma-conduct, dhyāna meditation, and incantations, asking about the cause of the stūpa, but no one in the assembly could explain it. The Patriarch said to the king: "This stūpa is a relic stūpa of the Buddha made by King Aśoka. Its four sides display signs: in front is King Śibi cutting his thigh to feed the hawk and rescue the dove; at the back is King Maitrībala carving his body to light lamps; on the left is Prince Sattva throwing himself over the cliff to feed the tigress; on the right is King Candraprabha abandoning his precious head. All four sides show the traces of the World-Honored One Śākyamuni cultivating the Way in previous lifetimes. Now, because Your Majesty has the karmic affinity, it has appeared." Having spoken, he lifted it. Delighted, the king immediately passed the throne to the crown prince and turned to the Patriarch to leave home; this was Bhikṣu Deda. The Patriarch then went to the country of the Yuezhi, where he received the offerings of that king, Baoyin, and the Venerable Haklenayaśa. Haklenayaśa asked the Patriarch: "What karmic connection causes the flock of cranes to follow me?" The Patriarch said: "Long ago, you were once a bhikṣu attending an assembly at the dragon palace. Your disciples all wished to follow you. You examined the five hundred disciples and saw that not one of them was worthy of receiving the exquisite offerings. At that time the disciples said: 'The Master always preaches the Dharma that one who is equal with respect to food is also equal with respect to Dharma. Since this is not the case now, what holiness is there?' You then ordered the crowd to attend the assembly. Because these disciples had meager merit and slight virtue, they fell into the feathered race. Five kalpas have now passed, and they have now taken rebirth as cranes." [Haklenayaśa] asked: "By what expedient means may they be liberated?" The Patriarch said: "I have the unsurpassed Dharma jewel; you should listen, receive it, and transform the bounds of the future." He then spoke a gāthā, saying: / "The mind turns in accord with myriad conditions; / Where it turns is truly profound and hidden. / Recognizing the nature while following the flow, / There is neither joy nor sorrow." / At that time, hearing the gāthā, the flock of cranes cried out as they flew away. The Patriarch sat cross-legged in stillness and suddenly transformed. Haklenayaśa and King Baoyin cremated him (jhāpita), collected the relics, and built a stūpa to make offerings to them. This was during the time of Emperor Huan of the Later Han (Zhengzong ji).
