Wu: In the second year of Huangwu, the upāsaka Zhi Qian, courtesy name Gongming, from the Yuezhi kingdom in the Western Regions, who was well versed in the scriptures and classics, traveled to Luoyang. He was dark, thin, with the whites of his eyes predominant and yellow pupils. People of the time had a saying: “Master Zhi has yellow eyes; though small in stature, he is a bag of wisdom.” Escaping turmoil, he returned to Wu. The Lord of Wu was delighted with him and appointed him Erudite. He translated one hundred and twenty-nine Buddhist scriptures in a total of one hundred and fifty-two fascicles. Qian had studied under Zhi Liang, courtesy name Jiming. Liang had studied under Lokakṣema (Zhi Chen). The world said that the vast knowledge under Heaven did not go beyond the three Zhis (Hongming ji).
